This past weekend I took a weekend shopping trip where I was determined to find myself a 1940′s shirtwaist dress. Ever since I completed writing the 1940′s Style Guide ebook I have been hunting for a comfortable, classic, day dress. The shirtwaist dress is by far the most popular of 40′s day dresses. Why? Because they look good on every body type. Because of this the style has remained popular ever since the 1940′s and is still a timeless classic today.
There have been quite a few shirtwaist dresses entering the market as spring fashions take center stage. Here are a few of my favorites so far:
Short-Sleeve 1947 Dress by J Peterman is a quality 1940′s replica shirtwaist dress. This one is designed for summer wear as it’s all cotton material breaths nicely. It is only available in black. I image other colors will come out soon for spring. The 3/4 sleeve and fuller swing skirt mark it as a late 40′s day dress. The pointed collar too is a popular fashion that carried over into the 1950′s house dress.
Long-Sleeve 1947 Dress (No. 1732) is the same day dress as above but with long 3/4 sleeves. Great for early morning or late afternoon events where the weather requires a little more warmth. This one comes in teal or teal Stripe (I love, love, love the teal stripe!) It’s on my “must buy” list.
40s Main Line A-line Dress (No. 3200) by J Peterman. If you want to feel like and angel floating around all day than this shirtwaist dress is for you. Made of silk crepe it is a high end day dress inspired by the classic 40′s cut that made the above J. Peterman dresses top sellers. Full skirt, notched collar and lightly puffed sleeves for the early to mid 1940′s look. Wearing this dress in the 1940′s you would never know there was a war going on.
Bedford Fair Lifestyles clothing specializes in fashion or the mature women in timeless classic cuts and materials. That means they are an ideal store to find 40′s and 50′s fashions made new. Like this soft 40′s day dress with shirtwaist top and slightly gathered skirt. The top is plain and simple which recalls war time fashions. A great find in “new” clothing.
Polka Dot Dress There is something very fun about this red polka dot updated 40′s day dress. The contrasting white collar reminds me of a 1940s Kitty Foyle style dress while the two button belt ads a bit of retro pop. I can’t stop dreaming of this dress, can you?
Teal Dress Ooooo. Here is another favorite this time from Old Pueblo Traders. Teal green 40′s day dress. I just love the color and pattern along with the feminine cut and simple thin belt. Great short sleeves in the typical early 40′s length. Nice drape to the skirt. You can’t go wrong with this dress.
These are just a few of the shirtwaist dresses I have found online and placed below as well as on the 1940′s Shop page. As Spring comes rolling in I expect to see more and more of these day dresses. As I find them they will be added to the 1940′s Women’ Clothing shop. Come back often and see what’s new.
If you are looking for vintage 40′s shirtwaist dresses I highly recommend you get a copy of the 1940′s Style Guide and check out the massive list of vintage retailers that carry 1940′s dresses and other clothing.
