1950 style clothing is back in fashion. Everywhere I look I see elements of 50′s style dresses, shirts, and pants in new modern clothing as well vintage reproduction clothing. If you are new to 50′s fashion you may not know what to look for when you shop. Here is my quick guide to buying new 1950 style clothing online:
1950′s Style Dresses
Summer Dress
Halter tops and swinging tea length skirts are a summer style icon of fashions in the 1950s. These casual, comfortable, and colorful dresses are very flattering on all body types. The side tying sash accentuates the ideal 50′s nipped in waist. This yellow plaid dress from J. Peterman is a high quality reproduction dress. Perfect for picnics in the park or strolls on the beach boardwalk.
Cherry Swing Dress
I’m not sure how popular cherry designs were in the 1950′s but they are certainly popular on 1950′s inspired clothing today. From retro pinups to the rockabilly music crowd red and white dresses, shirts, and shoes with cherry prints are in. This halter top dress with gathered bust features a skirt that wears a bit shorter then they would have in the 50′s but is more ideal for today’s vintage followers. If short vintage dresses are your favorites then you’ll love the collections at ModCloth and Tulle4us.
You may have heard of a style of dress called “house dress” or “swing dress.” These styles of 1950′s dresses had very full skirts worn with a puffy petticoat underneath. The top usually had mid length sleeves like this one or shorter cap sleeves (which are so cute!) Petticoats are something modern bodies are not used to wearing but luckily they are just as cute to wear without them. Many 50′s party dresses can be found at Chicstar.com.
Cocktail Dress
Full skirted dresses were not the only fashion icon of the 50′s. Two piece suit dresses were common in the 40′s but became slimmer and more form fitting in the 50′s. One piece dresses also became more form fitting, especially for evening wear, and naughty pinup models. These dresses are often called Cocktail, Wiggle, PinUp, Sheath or Bombshell dresses. Several online stores specialize in these designs. My favorites are Chicstar and Shabbyapple. See more of these dresses for sale on the 1960′s fashion page.
